One of our grant applicants in 2025. Located in the Mathare slum area, and a new name for us to meet. They received funding, and have been able to buy new school uniforms, and pay school fees for 11 learners who have completed their KJSEA exams and are now in senior school. We visited the children's home on our most recent trip in February 2026, and met Mercy (the founder and Mother) who is an inspiring and courageous woman. She set up the home in 1991 with 6 kids, and has since reached over 20,000 children - victims of teenage pregnancy, street kids, and orphans, offering them shelter, education and TLC. She receives no goverment funding. We are so proud to be a support and donator, to this incredible organisation, and look forward to visiting them again.
One of our grant applicants in 2025. Founded in 2013 by Gregory Waithaka - who grew up in the village, and wanted to give back to his community. Lea Mathare school focuses on education, nutrition and community support. They run menstrual pad drives, environmental clean ups, and housing a local school. They have supported over 1,000 students! They chose to spend the funding money on new school supplies such as textbooks, and stationary, and new school shoes!! You can see the joy it brings to the children, and we are so thankful and proud to have been able to help. We have since visited this wonderful small school, in February 2026.
Located in the Mathare slums, and founded in 2014. They were one of our grant applicants in 2025, they spent it paying for school rent, educational textbooks, and food. They have 150 students (and only 7 volunteer teachers!), which they feed twice a day, so being able to help them buy food essentials is super important! The kids will be able to thrive and learn better at school, knowing they are fed. Unfortunately, some of the students only meals will be had at school, which is why it is so important for schools such as Golden Bells, to keep their mealtimes going, and we are so thankful to have been able to be a part of it. They were also able to purchase new textbooks.
Gigil Gracious Givers was one of the successful grant applicants in 2024! With the help of the grant, they were able to purchase football kits and basic training gear for their junior and ladies teams, provided meals and transport for youth during their weekend training and mentorship events, donated sanitary pads and dignity packs to young girls on the street, hosted a Christmas outreach for junior football teams and young mothers, and provided food and supplies.
Joiner Sports Academy, one of the successful grant applicants in 2024. With the help of the grant, they were able to supply 50 families with food baskets - this helped alleviate food insecurity among vulnerable households. Over 55 children were provided with new school shoes, boosting their confidence and dignities. 5 children were awarded full scholarships including; provision of school uniform, purchase of essential learning materials, and payment of full tuition fees for the entire academic year and partial tuition support for over 45 children (this is 10 dollars per child each term).
Blossoms of Ghetto, one of the successful grant applicants in 2024. Their broader mission continues, they empower slum and street families through education, care and community support. With the grant, they were able to provide school uniforms in the slums of Mathare, serving 2,000 meals to their community through their feeding program, packing food hampers for the elderly, persons with disabilities, cancer warriors and orphans, hosting kids camps and purchase of books and learning materials! They have been able to open up a safe space for the children to study, and play. Enrolling several children in school, for example two young girls whose mother sadly passed away from HIV and TB, they were placed in foster care after being abandoned by their extended family, and are now in school and receiving the necessary TB treatment. They currently are supporting 7 other children who were in urgent need of support, and care. We keep in close contact with Blossoms of Ghetto, and receive many updates from them.
VICCO was another one of our successful grant applicants in 2024, they have spent the money on vulnerable populations in the Mukuru slums, particularly children, young mothers, and elderly individuals. They started a breakfast intitiative for schools, which has enabled them to supply 250 school children with daily nutritious breakfasts and neglected elderly individuals over 3 months. These meals have improved the concentration, attendance and overall well-being of the children from low-income households. The grant also covered full-year school fees for six vulnerable children, these children were at risk of dropping out of school due to financial constraints, the support has greatly uplifted the morale of their families and inspired hope for a better tomorrow! A portion of the funds have also helped cover transportation costs for their Fresh Wednesday food distribution program, this has enabled them to deliver fresh and healthy veg to over 2000 community members every week, combating hunger and malnutrition!
Another one of our successful grant applications - Kimta School is located in Kibera, which is Africa's largest slum, where an estimated 1 million people live. A lot of houses in Kibera, lack running water and toilets, as well as water and electricity being limited access. Despite the hardships, Kibera has a strong sense of community, which we have visited several times and seen first hand this. Kimta used their funds to purchase many education necessities, textbooks and sanitary products. They also hold afterschool programs, the children that live in the slum, are able to reside somewhere safe to focus on schoolwork, arts and crafts, and enjoy time with their friends safely. The textbooks purchased will be used widely in their afterschool programs.
Another one of our successful grant applicants was Andy Bottomer, and his appeal. He has been able to provide freshly painted goals, course books and stationery, and fitness training courses in football, rugby, and netball. Andy's passion for sports and teaching, led him to establish ' Community Sports Leaders Africa ' - supporting 12 primary schools and 10 football clubs, in Chipita, Northern Malawi.
Rezina Centre was another one of our successful grant applicants in 2024, they have spent their money buying educational items, and supplies such as textbooks, glue sticks, pens, paints and so much more - for the children to use at their school.
